The subject

Crocodile leather - scales at their noblest.

It is the most sought-after leather in luxury leather goods. Its scale pattern, regular on the belly and more dynamic on the flanks, is never reproduced identically: two skins will not yield the same card holder. Tanned in Italy by an exotic leather specialist, it retains a suppleness and depth of color that no imitation can achieve.

  • Genuine scales — each cardholder has its own unique pattern
  • Italian tanning, deep hues with a matte, glossy, or gum finish
  • Dimensions: 10 × 7.5 cm — 4 card slots + 1 bill compartment
  • Crafted in very small batches, only a few pieces per color
The Workshop

Assembled and hand-finished in France.

Crocodile leather is unforgiving: a misplaced cut and the scale pattern is broken. Each cardholder is therefore individually positioned on the hide before cutting, then assembled and finished by hand by French leather craftsmen.

  • Full inner lining in French lambskin or goatskin
  • Edges worked in 3 stages: sanding, hot iron filing, beeswax dyeing
  • Individually positioned cut to respect the scale pattern
  • Traditional French leather goods expertise

"I discovered Atelier Bertrand online while searching for a brand that offered something extra. I've been buying leather pieces for over 25 years: Schott, Chevignon, Redskins, Marlboro… The quality is truly incredible, magnificent! Jérôme is passionate and available. I don't need to look any further…"

Frequently Asked Questions

What sets crocodile leather apart?

It is the most sought-after leather in luxury leather goods, known for its scale pattern and density. The pattern varies depending on the area of the skin: regular and square on the belly, more dynamic and elongated on the flanks. Since no two skins are identical, each cardholder has its own unique design. Its density gives it a much greater durability and lifespan than that of a classic smooth leather.

Where does the leather come from and is it traceable?

The skins are tanned in Italy by a tannery specializing in exotic leathers. The crocodile trade is regulated by the CITES convention, which requires documentation of origin for each skin circulated internationally.

What are the dimensions?

The card holder measures 10 cm in length by 7.5 cm in height. It has 4 card slots and a central bill compartment — a format designed for both jacket and trouser pockets.

What is the inner lining?

Each cardholder is fully lined with French lambskin or goatskin, depending on the color. This high-end lining provides a very soft feel on the inside and protects the cards, with no synthetic surface.

How to care for crocodile leather?

Low maintenance is sufficient. Wipe with a soft, dry cloth, avoid prolonged sun exposure and heat sources. For matte and rubber finishes, a nourishing exotic leather milk once or twice a year will maintain the suppleness of the scales. Avoid classic polishes, which are too rich in pigments.
