The material

Crocodile leather — scales at their finest.

It is the most sought-after leather in luxury leather goods. Its scale pattern, regular on the belly and livelier on the flanks, is never reproduced identically: no two hides give the same card holder. Tanned in Italy by a specialist in exotic leathers, it keeps a suppleness and a depth of colour no imitation can match.

  • Genuine scales — each card holder has its own pattern
  • Italian tanning, deep shades in matt, glossy or gum finish
  • Dimensions: 10 × 7.5 cm — 4 card slots + 1 note slot
  • Made in very small runs, a few pieces per colour
The Workshop

Assembled and hand-finished in France.

Crocodile leather is unforgiving: one misplaced cut and the scale pattern is broken. Each card holder is therefore positioned individually on the hide before cutting, then assembled and finished by hand by French leather artisans.

  • Fully lined in French lambskin or goatskin
  • Edges worked in three stages: sanding, hot-iron creasing, beeswax dye
  • Each piece positioned individually to respect the scale pattern
  • Traditional French leather goods craftsmanship

"I discovered Atelier Bertrand online while searching for a brand that offered something extra. I've been buying leather pieces for over 25 years: Schott, Chevignon, Redskins, Marlboro… The quality is truly incredible, magnificent! Jérôme is passionate and available. I don't need to look any further…"

Frequently Asked Questions

What sets crocodile leather apart?

It is the most sought-after leather in luxury leather goods, for its scale pattern and its density. The pattern varies with the area of the hide: regular and square on the belly, livelier and more elongated on the flanks. Since no two hides are identical, each card holder has its own pattern. Its density gives it far greater resistance and a far longer life than an ordinary smooth leather.

Where does the leather come from and is it traceable?

The hides are tanned in Italy by a tannery specialising in exotic leathers. The crocodile trade is regulated by the CITES convention, which requires documentation of origin for every hide traded internationally.

What are the dimensions?

The card holder measures 10 cm wide by 7.5 cm high. It has 4 card slots and a central note slot, a format designed for both jacket and trouser pockets.

What is the inner lining?

Each card holder is fully lined in French lambskin or goatskin, depending on the colour. This high-end lining gives a very soft feel inside and protects the cards, with no synthetic surface.

How to care for crocodile leather?

Very little care is needed. Wipe with a soft dry cloth, and avoid prolonged sun and heat sources. On matt and gum finishes, an exotic-leather conditioning milk once or twice a year keeps the scales supple. Avoid ordinary polishes, which are too heavily pigmented.
